EXEMPLARY APPLICATION EXAMPLES

METALWORKING FLUIDS

During brief moments of very high pressure that occur during the machining process, two gliding metallic surfaces that touch each other must remain separate. The job of metalworking fluids is to ensure this. Otherwise, the worst-case scenario from a tribological view would be the occurrence of cold welding between the sliding partners.

Thus, metalworking fluids are treated with EP (extreme pressure) additives, which are intended to prevent cold welding. We can test this protective behavior against cold welding (seizure resistance) in our test laboratory on the SRV® using load increase testing, either with standard or application-relevant test specimens.

Investigation priorities

In the example below, the influence of EP-additives and adhesion promoters on the seizure resistance of a base oil is analyzed via load increase testing. The illustration shows the friction coefficient curves during a load increase test of three different specimens with additives. While the red curve already begins to seize after load level 2, adhesive failure in the green sample does not occur until load level 5. In addition, the green sample shows the significantly lowest friction coefficient.

WEAR AND FRICTION-REDUCING EFFECT OF COATINGS

Modern constructions frequently use friction- and wear-reducing DLC coatings (diamond-like carbon coatings) for lightweight design, downsizing and efficiency-enhancing measures. With its comprehensive measurement and analysis technology, SRV® offers a powerful tribometric analysis platform to test such coating systems efficiently and meaningfully for their adhesion, wear resistance and friction reduction.

Investigation priorities

Online analysis of ultrasonic emissions and the measurement of electrical contact resistance in combination with friction signals can differentiate damage mechanisms, determine smooth running characteristics and define wear coefficients. SRV® allows the performance of tests in lubricated and dry condition. To rapidly achieve meaningful and extensive tribological profiles for coating and substrate combinations, you can include climatic ambient conditions, humidity and temperature measurement in the test chamber and air conditioning system, and vary the load parameters.

FRICTION AND WEAR BEHAVIOR OF SOLID LUBRICANTS

Solid lubricants in powder form are used in numerous applications – e.g. high temperature lubrication or metal processing – to reduce friction and wear in basic substances such as water, grease or oil. They are intended to ensure a separating layer between the friction partners under extreme conditions. 

Investigation priorities

SRV® test technology can evaluate the tribological profiles of solid lubricant additives for their seizure resistance and their friction and wear behavior under varying temperatures and concentration ratios.

TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE OF LUBRICATING OILS AND GREASES

The example below illustrates finding an equivalent or better alternative grease for uses at temperatures above 100°C compared to a reference grease (grease 1). Six greases are tested under application-relevant load parameters under moderate and high normal force.

Investigation priorities

It is evident that the greases, despite similar friction coefficients, have significant differences in wear behavior as well as in the stability of their friction-reducing effect. Some specimens also react sensitively to an increase in normal force, while others show nearly the same behavior at moderate and high normal force.

SEIZURE RESISTANCE OF HIGH-TEMPERATURE MATERIALS

If the operating temperature of components exceeds the scope of what conventional lubricants can handle, the component materials must themselves have good sliding and seizure-resistance properties. Using special constructions, we can examine material pairings at temperatures of up to 1000°C in the SRV®. This can be done with exemplary specimens in standard geometries or with original components.

Investigation priorities

We typically investigate seizure resistance, wear behavior and coating life under application-oriented load conditions. The illustration below shows an increase of the test force during the investigation until adhesive failure occurs between the test parts.
